A Common Sense Leader
Matt Gress serves as our voice in the Arizona House of Representatives, working every day to get results.
As a former public school teacher, school board member, and the state’s budget chief, Matt knows how to solve tough problems. Whether it’s more resources and manpower at our border, lower taxes, balanced budgets, protecting our veterans and seniors, increasing teacher pay, advocating for police and public safety, tackling homelessness, or preventing the failed policies of California from taking hold in our state — Matt is 100% focused on the important issues impacting Arizonans.
As a proud Republican, Matt was elected as State Representative for Arizona’s Fourth Legislative District in 2022 and reelected by an even larger margin in 2024. Matt has been endorsed by some of our community’s most respected organizations: Arizona State Troopers, the Arizona Police Association, the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, the Arizona Medical Association, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, the Arizona Humane Society, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona.
Like many, Matt came here from somewhere else — small town Oklahoma. The youngest of four, he was raised by a single mom in a single-wide trailer.
Growing up, Matt’s family didn’t have much, but that never stopped them from dreaming big. Matt learned the value of hard work, to respect his elders and to count his blessings.
Matt worked his way through college driving school buses, and became the first in his family to earn a degree. While attending the University of Oklahoma, Matt was selected for the distinguished Harry S. Truman Scholarship — awarded to only one college student in each state who possesses leadership potential and a call to public service. After graduating, Matt was accepted to join Teach for America, a national teaching corps focused on serving in high-need, high-poverty schools. Matt taught high school English.
As our State Representative, Matt has been one of the state’s most effective lawmakers. He authored and secured passage of the most comprehensive school safety legislation in decades, adding more security personnel on school campuses. He led the effort to get “Preston’s Law” enacted into law, to address the teen mob violence that ultimately took the life of Preston Lord, an East Valley teen. And Matt secured millions for a new scholarship program for spouses and children of law enforcement and correctional officers to boost recruitment and retention of our men and women in blue.
Matt, who lives in Phoenix with his husband Daniel, currently serves as Chairman of the House Education Committee, Chairman of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He holds a Masters in Public Administration, with a focus on state and local government finance and public management, from Syracuse University.
