Matt Gress serves Arizona’s Fourth Legislative District in the Arizona House of Representatives, where he has earned a reputation as one of the Legislature’s most effective and solutions-oriented lawmakers.

With experience as a classroom teacher, school board member, and Arizona’s former state budget director, Matt understands both policy and people, and how to bring Republicans and Democrats together to get meaningful things accomplished.
Matt’s story starts in the small town of Cyril, Oklahoma…
where he was raised by a single mother in a single-wide trailer as the youngest of four children.
Growing up, money was tight, but Matt learned values that still guide him today: work hard, respect others, keep your word, and never stop believing in opportunity.
Matt worked his way through college by driving school buses and became the first person in his family to graduate from college.
While attending the University of Oklahoma, Matt earned the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship, awarded annually to students demonstrating leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to public service.
After college, Matt joined Teach For America and taught high school English in an underserved school, an experience that shaped his commitment to education and opportunity.
He later earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Syracuse University with a focus on public finance and government management.
Prior to serving in the Legislature, Matt worked as an analyst in the Arizona Legislature’s budget office, focused on energy and water issues at the Arizona Corporation Commission, and later served as Budget Director under Governor Doug Ducey. He also served on the Madison Elementary School District Governing Board, where he helped oversee one of Arizona’s premier elementary school districts.
Matt is a proud member and past President of the Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club. He moved to Arizona in 2013 to be closer to his parents and now lives in Phoenix with his husband, Daniel. Matt is committed to keeping Arizona a place where all families can thrive, businesses can grow, and future generations have the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

Matt helped author the largest income tax reduction in Arizona history and has consistently fought to keep taxes low for Arizona families and small businesses.
He also supported eliminating taxes on groceries, rent, and essential everyday expenses to help Arizonans keep more of what they earn.

Putting Students First
As Chairman of the House Education Committee, Matt has led efforts to improve school safety, increase accountability, and strengthen educational outcomes.
Matt authored landmark school safety legislation that increased campus security personnel and improved coordination between schools and law enforcement.
He also introduced legislation that would provide additional funding for increased oversight and accountability in the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Accountability Program. Every taxpayer dollar should be spent appropriately and transparently.

Matt also helped lead passage of Preston’s Law to address teen violence and improve public safety protections for Arizona families.
